Medicines and Prescriptions
When your pet requires medication, you may obtain medicines directly from Meadowside Veterinary Clinic or request a written prescription to obtain medicines from another veterinary practice or pharmacy.
Our veterinary surgeons prescribe medicines in accordance with the Veterinary Medicines Regulations and professional guidance issued by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Your Choice
You are free to obtain prescribed medicines from:
• Meadowside Veterinary Clinic
• Another veterinary practice
• A registered veterinary pharmacy
• A pharmacy legally permitted to supply veterinary medicines
You may request a written prescription for most medicines.
Prescription Fees
A reasonable fee may be charged for issuing a written prescription.
In order to prescribe prescription-only medicines, your pet must be under the care of a veterinary surgeon. This normally requires a recent clinical examination so that the veterinary surgeon can assess your pet’s condition and determine that the medication is appropriate.
Consultation or examination fees may therefore apply before a prescription can be issued.
If a written prescription is requested following a consultation, a prescription fee may apply. Clients choosing to obtain medicines elsewhere will not be charged higher consultation fees than clients obtaining medicines directly from the practice.
Re-examination Requirements
Under veterinary medicines legislation and professional guidance, prescription-only medicines (POM-V) may only be supplied when a veterinary surgeon has your pet under their care.
This means your pet must have been examined recently enough for the veterinary surgeon to make a clinical assessment and determine that the medication remains appropriate.
The required interval between examinations depends on the condition being treated and the medication prescribed.
Repeat Prescriptions
Repeat prescriptions may be issued where appropriate. However, periodic re-examination of your pet may be required before further medication can be authorised.
Medicine Pricing
The price of medicines supplied by the practice is available on request.
Where appropriate, we can also provide information about:
• the price of the medicine
• the quantity supplied
• any applicable dispensing or prescription fees
Safety and Returns
For safety and regulatory reasons, prescription medicines cannot normally be returned once they have left the practice.
If you have any questions about your pet’s medication, prescription options, or pricing information, please contact the practice and a member of our team will be happy to help.
